David Holmgren, permaculture co-originator, gives a presentation to the Solar Punk Society community, addressing the role of permaculture in a Solar Punk future.
David Holmgren gives a public talk on creating bushfire resilient communities and landscapes, organised by Pat Rayner of Permaculture Blue Mountains. Thanks to Gary Caganoff for the videos, which are available to watch on Youtube.
In this presentation, David Holmgren draws on a lifelong passion for ethnobotanical knowledge and practise to tell stories that celebrate abundance and diversity, pushing the boundaries of social and, at times, legal norms. His true stories cut paths through the psychosocial wilderness towards a relocalised ethnobotany of the everyday to sustain us in the shadow of failing techno industrial civilisation.
David Holmgren explaining a low cost technique for revegetation of eroded gullies without heavy machinery or chemicals. The technique turns thick, fire-prone blackberry cover into useful fire-resistant trees on what was a landscape completed denuded in the gold era. Working bee action in the background.
Permaculture gives us a toolkit for moving from a culture of fear and scarcity to one of love and abundance.

Nice overview creating a broad range of lifestyle options for the solar punk’ community. David’s explanation from wikipedia was not that audible so here it is, for the boomers like me who have not heard of it!
“A Solarpunk Manifesto was published in 2019 that describes solarpunk as “a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion, and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question ‘what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?'”
“Solarpunk is a literary and artistic movement that envisions and works toward actualizing a sustainable future interconnected with nature and community. The “solar” represents solar energy as a renewable energy source and an optimistic vision of the future that rejects climate doomerism, while the “punk” refers to the countercultural, post-capitalist, and decolonial enthusiasm for creating such a future.”
I appreciated the distinction of individual, household, and community scale of permaculture application.
