Principles beyond the borders: seven and more in the pipeline

Principles in Translations
Earlier this month we reported that David Holmgren’s seminal Permaculture: Principles and Pathways beyond sustainability is now available in French.

Published by rue de l’echiquier, Permaculture sits very nicely with the very interesting and thought provoking titles in their « Initial(e)s DD » series. What is so special about the French edition by the way, is the addition of the preface written by Yves Cochet, esteemed enviro campaigner in France, former cabinet minister, now a Greens’ MP in the European parliament. We are hoping to get it translated into English so that non-French readers can share his thoughts.

Now, with the French edition  the book is available in seven languages as you can see in the picture (eight if you include the English edition published in the UK).  The author of the book in the picture no doubt wishes if he could read all of these, and sends many thanks to the translators, editors and publishers. If you know someone who should read the book, but whose mother tongue is not  English, maybe you can recommend them  Permaculture Principles in their native languages if it is  Spanish, Portugues, Italian, Czech, Japanese or French.

To add to the list, we are happy to announce that the permaculture classic title is almost ready in Korean. We have not seen it yet, but the local publisher Borim Press told us the publication is imminent. Will let you know more about it soon, so that you can spread the word amongst your Korean friends. (The book 퍼머컬처 is officially published on Oct 31. Read more about it here in Korean.)

Do not despair if your preferred language is none of the above, we are working on all fronts for many different languages, but especially German and Chinese. The 大地旅人/Earth Passengers in Taiwan is in the final stages and the Chinese edition should be ready before the end of the year. Germany’s Drachen Verlag has revised the release date, and now looking at early 2015 for the release of the German translation.

To give you a taste, here is a draft cover from the Chinese edition and the most recent news from the German publisher. Interesting how the word permaculture looks in different languages. With the addition of the Korean and Chinese, along with the Japanese translation already available, it seems that permaculture has finally taken off in East Asia, as well as in Europe.

Permacalendar 2015

2015 Permaculture CalendarAn old sage once noted fruit flies like an apple, while time flies like an arrow….indeed.

So now it’s that time of the year again for all of us to take stock, organise the garden, get one’s life in order and develop a schedule for the warmer season and the new year.

The first thing you need to get is the 2015 permacalendar.

This deceptively simple but thought-provoking permaculture calendar is for your home or workplace. Illustrating one of the twelve permaculture design principles each month gives you the time to absorb them. Each month’s example includes an image and story of locally appropriate sustainable living and design, demonstrating that month’s principle.

The new 2015 version includes a basic planting guide that will make it easy for you to get  productive crops and healthier plants by planning your garden activities according to the moon phases.

Plan, prepare and propagate with the permacalendar 2015.

Ideal gift to welcome in the New Year

2014 Permaculture Calendar CoverIf you haven’t already seen the Permaculture Calendar you can’t appreciate the amount of information and the motivational content in it. Each month a permaculture principle is highlighted. The calendar offers the chance to remember all the twelve by the end of 2014! This calendar is not one to throw out at the end of the year; add it to your library, in particular the permaculture section, as it will (they all will) be invaluable when revising the principles …. the more simple aids we have the better. Used in conjunction with David Holmgren’s Permaculture Principles and Pathways beyond Sustainability, and Richard Telford’s Permaculture Principles website you can develop such a facility with the principles that they automatically come to mind when confronted with a problem and truly become extremely useful thinking tools.

We’re just mentioning this because you may like to use this time of the year to tell your friends and rellies that you care for them with a useful AND ethical gift (produced in Australia, 100% post consumer recycled paper, using vegetable based inks, and 10% of net returns donated to Permafund)  that won’t break the bank, and supports the small home business that produced it. A more ‘sustainable’ gift is hard to find!

Teaching Kit upgrade includes “A rhymer’s manual”

fvssSince Permaculture: A Rhymer’s Manual was released earlier this year, lots of people have commented this is an ideal tool to teach Permaculture principles. Like the cards and magnets in our popular Teaching Kit, Charlie Mgee’s blend of clever and serious lyrics accompanied by catchy Ukelele music, is the perfect way to reinforce learning of the principles. Permaculture: A Rhymer’s Manual  is an ideal addition to our teaching tool box like the icons, proverbs, fridge magnets and other materials. The power of music helps Permaculture principles stick in the mind.
So much so, we have decided to integrate the musical CD in our new batch of the Teacher’s Kit. A new eco synthesis in true permaculture fashion. The new kit with the Formidable Vegetable Sound System album Permaculture: A Rhymer’s Manual sells for $100. Check it out here.

Hot in Brazil

Our Brazilian friend, Marcos Ninguém, reports that a special permaculture course run in celebration of 20 years of permaculture in Brazil, was a huge success, with some 170 participants. The celebration gathered together activists from the  pioneer generations such as Peter Webb and Skye (Australians), as well as new generation activists (Marcos himself, his brother Jappa, and Guilherme Castanha).

It also coincided with the launch of the much awaited Portuguese language edition of David Holmgren’s Permacultura, Princîpios e caminhos além da Sustentabilidade for which David sent a message.

Continue for some photos from the gatherings in Brazil. Thanks go to PoMei Kwong for translations.

Oi da Australia

This is the video message sent from David Holmgren for the launch of his Principles book in Portuguese, “Permacultura: príncípíos e camínhos além da sustentabílídade” published in Brasil.
