Explore Spring Creek Community Forest with David Holmgren, permaculture co-originator

UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, this tour has been cancelled.

For over thirty years, David Holmgren has been leading tours of Melliodora, one of the best known permaculture demonstration sites in the country. On those tours he shows elements beyond the boundaries where the husbandry and care of the common land complements the intimate husbandry and care on the property.

Now there is the opportunity to join David in a tour beyond the boundaries down the gully to Spring Creek, exploring the territory where he, Su Dennett and others in the community have for decades been stewarding the common land on a larger scale, making tracks, planting and pruning trees, grazing goats, building leaky weirs and engaging in other positive action that enhances ecological diversity, makes the land more fire safe and amenable to locals and visitors alike.

Come and learn about:

  • Local land use history
  • Permaculture approaches to ecological restoration
  • Water sensitive urban design for stormwater
  • Bushfire safe landscaping
  • Trees for a future of abundance and harmony

This tour is:

  • for anyone involved in or considering  informal, and community based management of common land
  • for anyone who has been on a tour of Melliodora. This is the next level in understanding zone 4, the managed wild
  • for anyone wanting to influence local Landcare towards more holistic approaches without herbicides
  • a goldmine of lived experience and wisdom

Practicalities.

The tour will meet at Melliodora (16 Fourteenth St, Hepburn, Djaara Country). The distance of the tour is 1.5km on walking tracks, although there are some rough parts. Please wear boots and long pants, coats, hats etc as dictated by the weather. Morning and afternoon tea provided. BYO packed lunch and water bottle.
