I am very excited about the launch of Do with Su on the Holmgren Hub. It is a culmination of a long process for my partner in love and livelihood to share her skills, passion and wisdom with a wider audience.
Since the early days of Su catering on Holmgren Design two week residential Permaculture Design Courses, many have suggested a Su Dennett recipe book; something she has resisted with goat-like tenacity, partly because she says, “One writer in the household is enough”, but also because recipes are not her thing. Instead, her creative response to what’s in season, abundant, and coming with love and care means no soup, salad, bread, cake, yoghurt, cheese or preserve is ever the same as the last.
Nevertheless her passion with food, and all the kindred aspects of the household non-monetary economy, have distilled repeating patterns of nourishment spiced with a dash of frugal hedonism that she has been sharing with family, colleagues and visitors to Melliodora for many decades.
Do with Su is the answer to all those pleas over the years for more detail, if not precise recipes, to help others live more lightly on the earth while enjoying better health and happiness. Do with Su was the brainchild of the Holmgren Design team who hold Su in high esteem, and wanted others to share in what they themselves have gained by being fed, nurtured and challenged by Su over the years.
Video is Su’s natural medium; doing stuff more than talking about it has always been her way. In this video series, filmed at Melliodora, mostly in the kitchen, Su conveys the why as well as the how of her homesteading domain.
Whether you are at the start of your journey to greater personal, household and collective reliance or are already a seasoned manager of household abundance and nourishment, I know that Do with Su will provide inspiration, strategies and techniques, and even a recipe or two that you can add to your mix for household abundance.
And I get to play a supporting role, which reflects just one part of the ambiguous complementarity that has existed between the two of us for more than 40 years.
